Hey! Great post - I think you've gotta know your lines *cold* for an audition, if you want to be comfortable in the role. I even created a (free) website to help actors with this challenge - it performs your cues, then pauses for you to read your lines. No software, just upload your script and you can rehearse on-line or downloaded an MP3. Very simple, but very powerful. www,ReadThrough.com/actors - learn your lines! :-D

Thx for the comment Jake. I like to think of memorizing as a muscle. The more you work it, the better you get at it. That's a simple answer. About in character or out of character memorizing...well, that's just a personal preference. Depends on your acting foundation. Like how you develop your character. Something I can't tell you...you have to figure out what works best for you. But, what I can tell is...learn your lines!

Hi DaJuan,

Great blog, I completely agree. I actually found myself wondering why actors messed up lines so much, but they were already at the point where they WERE the show, so they had the right to mess up a couple. For beginners, like me, I will have no excuse, and I expect them to treat me as a beginner. I have a question for ya.

Do you memorize your lines in character, or do you memorize almost monotone, so when time comes to act it doesn't feel "mechanical"? I have done it both ways, I was just curious which way you go?

Thanks!

hmm dajuan, i have been struggling with this same issue, and I appreciate this post. I think Oprah said the voices in your head start out as whispers and then basically start slapping you in the face if you don't listen. My only conundrum (did i just use that word AND quote Oprah before noon?) is that the voices in my head are a little crazier than yours. but you slapped me in the face so thank you.

I just watched Strictly Ballroom last night and it dealt with the same theme. You should watch it, it dealt with compromising your craft for the powers that be and the good of other people. Do the Paso Doble my friend because a life lived in fear is a life half lived. loves you.

Wow! Talk about an unexpected ending. One more reason why I give you actors much respect. But even for behind the camera folks like me, we experience similar things. The trick of it is, and this ain't easy, is to not let it frustrate you and make you bitter. Ever met those ppl who've worked in this game of show and talk so negatively about it? I was becoming that person. But I've learned things will look different when you allow your perspective to change.

Keep the positive coming! See ya online soon. Lol

That's a hard lesson ESPECIALLY working in this industry. Comparing my success or lack there of to others began to make me bitter, cynical, and frustrated. Thank God I realized, tho late in the game, my journey is just that. MINE. Looking at others' and basically "hatin" is a distraction from focusing on your own journey to success. Not to mention, everyone who APPEARS successful may not be. They drive a phat whip then live in a house with no furniture or sold their souls for material gain. Behind the wheel and designer shades may be an unhappy soul.
